Vilhelm Hammershøi. Light and silence
The National Museum in Poznań is opening the first in Poland and this part of Europe monographic exhibition of the unique Scandinavian artist Vilhelm Hammershøi. The exhibition entitled “Vilhelm Hammershøi. Light and Silence” is an event of the highest importance to us, because it is for the first time that art lovers in Poland will have the opportunity to encounter the works of this most outstanding Danish artist.
Hammershøi painted atmospheric landscapes, realistic portraits, extraordinary views of architecture, and above all interiors which emanate the atmosphere of silence. The aim of the exhibition is to present a broad range of Hammershøi’s œuvre, and explore main artistic problems of his work such as sophistication of colour, thriftiness of narration, the role of light, contemplative mood and the sense of space. The exhibition will present both the most famous paintings of the Danish master, as well as rarely displayed drawings, watercolours, and photographs, which the artist treated as autonomous medium. By collecting works from all periods of Hammershøi’s work, including the studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, and last years of his life, it will be possible to trace the development of the artist’s style.
The exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, that agreed to loan the fundamental part of the exhibited works. Hammershøi’s paintings will be also loan from other leading museums and art institutions, among others: Hirschsprung Collection in Copenhagen, Musée d’Orsay in Paris, Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo or the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin, as well as from the private collection of the Ambassador John L. Loeb Jr.
Exhibition curator: Martyna Łukasiewicz
Arrangement: Paulina Tyro-Niezgoda i Piotr Matosek
Please be advised that the entrance to the exhibition is possible through the door in the old part of the National Museum in Poznań (opposite plac Wolności).
