Roztrzaskana tablica/The cracked plaque

Podczas II wojny światowej, a dokładniej 29 stycznia 1945 r., w czasie zaciętych walk o Poznań. Ratusz został poważnie uszkodzony, runęła wieża, a sale drugiego i trzeciego piętra strawił pożar. Tuż po zakończeniu wojny zdecydowano o odbudowie Ratusza. W 1954 r. budynek oddano do użytku, zmieniono jednak jego funkcje użytkowe. Gmach przestał być siedzibą władz miejskich, urządzono w nim Muzeum Historii Miasta Poznana (dzisiaj Ratusz – Muzeum Poznania). Przy wejściu do Ratusza powieszono wówczas piaskowcową tablicę upamiętniającą dzieje gmachu. Wykonał ją mistrz kamieniarski Bolesław Nowak. Tablica popękała podczas demontażu w 1999 r. i jako świadek historii trafiła do naszych zbiorów.

During World War Two, and more specifically on January 29, 1945, during the fierce fights to liberate Poznań, the Town Hall was severely damaged; its tower collapsed and the halls of the second and third floors were consumed by fire. Shortly after the war ended, a decision was made to rebuild the Town Hall. In 1954, the building was put back into use, but its functions were altered. It no longer was the seat of municipal authorities and became instead the site of the Museum of the History of the City of Poznań (today’s Town Hall – Museum of Poznań). A sandstone plaque commemorating the history of the building was then installed at the entrance to the building. It was made by master stonemason Bolesław Nowak. The plaque cracked during dismantling in 1999 and, as a witness to history, ended up in our collection.
