The beginnings of the National Museum Poznań Library date back to 1904, related to the opening of Kaiser Friedrich Museum. From the beginning, the library collection had a scientific character, which was consistently maintained during the functioning of the Great Poland Museum (1918) and currently. Journals and books in the field of art history, art theory, museology, monographs, exhibition catalogs, collections and auctions, publications related to military science, numismatics, sculpture, architecture, conservation, ethnography, musicology, and the decorative arts are collected. Among Polish and foreign titles, part of them has been collected since their first publication. The library serves primarily the museum staff and is also available to external people in the Reading Room. The library collection includes about 74,900 titles (September 2022). The catalog of the entire collection is located in the library in the old museum building.
