Nasza płytka gabro to fragment zasadowej skały głębinowej o intrygującym użyleniu i niejednorodnym, zielonkawym kolorycie. Została odnaleziona podczas prac archeologicznych prowadzonych w 1952 r. Odkryto ją w prawdopodobnym miejscu pochówku Mieszka I, w grobie usytuowanym na osi nawy głównej katedry. Większość badaczy uważa, że jest ona niewielkim fragmentem okładziny zdobiącej zewnętrzną ścianę grobowca księcia. Druga koncepcja upatruje w niej elementu przenośnego ołtarzyka należącego do biskupa misyjnego Jordana. Według tej hipotezy to właśnie on, a nie Mieszko I, spoczął w przebadanym grobie. Our gabbro plate is a fragment of an alkaline deep-sea rock with intriguing foliation and a varied, greenish colour. It was found during archaeological digs in 1952 in the probable burial place of Mieszko I, in a tomb situated along the axis of the cathedral’s nave. Most researchers believe that it is a small fragment of the lining decorating the outer wall of the duke’s tomb. Others see it as part of a portable altar, property of the missionary bishop Jordan. According to this hypothesis, it was he, rather than Mieszko I, who was buried in the tomn. This theory is considered highly controversial. Will we ever find out why this fragment of rock was polished over a thousand years ago?
