Władysław Ostrowski (1878-9142) began his studies in Wojciech Gerson’s Drawing Class in Warsaw and continued from 1895-1901 in the studios of Florian Cynk, Jacek Malczewski, Teodor Axentowicz and Leon Wyczółkowski at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. After his stay in Munich, he went to Paris, where he studied for a year at the Académie Julian. Before 1905, the artist spent some time in Podolia with the Turczyński family and in Tokarówka in Ukraine. From 1907 until around 1930 he lived in Warsaw, then moving to Grodzisk Mazowiecki. From 1915 until the outbreak of the Second World War, he was a full member of TZSP, where he often exhibited. From his initial fascination with battle motifs, he moved towards landscape and portrait painting. Many of his landscape studies were created during his stay in the Borderlands and holidays spent in the Tatra Mountains.

Description of the painting: The meadow is perhaps the same one as the one exhibited at TPSP in Krakow in 1902 by the artist at his debut, entitled “Polanka in Autumn”. In this small picture with a tasteful, subtle colour palette, one can find the desire to capture colour-light relationships, also visible in many of his Tatra landscapes.
