The lecture will introduce the geographic and social context of the painter’s work in France in 1875-1887. Where did Chełmoński live and work? When and why did he move? What places did he frequent, who did he know? A search conducted in Polish and foreign archives has allowed researchers of Chełmoński’s work to establish previously unknown facts and verify past findings. This allows us to better understand the painter’s choices related to his own work, ambitions, and self-promotion in the international circle of artists in Paris in the last quarter of the 19th century.
the lecture will be presented by: Mariusz Głowacki, curator of the Warsaw edition of the exhibition (National Museum in Warsaw)
The lecture will concern the period following Chełmoński’s return to Poland from France. At that time, he purchased an estate in Kuklówka in Mazovia, where he worked for over 25 years, until his death. The works he created in that period differ from the ones that came before. The speaker will strive to answer some key questions: why did the artist renounce the subject matter of his previous works? What inspired him? Which paintings were made in Kuklówka? How to assess the works produced in that period against the background of his entire oeuvre?
the lecture will be presented by: dr Arkadiusz Krawczyk, co-curator of the Poznań edition of the exhibition (National Museum in Poznań)
- May 31, 2025 (Saturday), 11:00 – Rabble or idyll – the stereotypical image of the countryside and its inhabitants?
A controversial fusion between Chełmoński, who celebrated the beaty of the „Polish” countryside, with Reymont, who described the tragic fate of Jagna against the background of the scenic village of Lipce, was created in the last film adaptation of „The Peasants” („Chłopi”). This distinctive combination seems to solidify a certain definite, discussion-worthy image of Polish folklore. What is more, each of the three fields: art, literature, and film is accompanied by a process of creation that may have a different justification – a desire for seeking the truth or, on the contrary – idealisation. Is there such a phenomenon as peasantmania? How was the Polish countryside imagined, and what motivated artists and writers to take up folkloric themes? How does all this translate into the language of the modern, moving image, and how does it influence our perception of that reality?
the panel will be moderated by: Michał Błaszczyński, head of the Museum of Applied Arts in the Royal Castle of Poznań, department of the National Museum in Poznań
panel members: dr Aleksandra Krypczyk-de Barra, curator of the Kraków edition of the exhibition (National Museum in Kraków), prof. Radosław Okulicz-Kozaryn (Department of Positivist and Young Poland Literature of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań), dr Agnieszka Powierska-Domalewska (State Academy of Applied Sciences in Włocławek)
- June 15, 2025 (Sunday), 11:00 – Peasant men, peasant women, Chełmoński – on art with a journalist and ethnographer
A shepherdess toying with gossamer strands, breakfast on the grass accompanied by a spectacle of living nature, a farmhand at work in the nimbus of the rising sun – these are just some of the snapshots from Chełmoński’s iconic works documenting the life of peasants. How much do these images differ from the shocking stories told by Joanna Kuciel-Frydryszak in her best-selling „Peasant Women” („Chłopki”)? The images may be separated by a hundred years, but was the reality much different in the 19th century? The meeting with the author of said book and ethnographer will bring the customs of the Polish countryside closer and allow to verify the artist’s vision.
the panel will be moderated by: Aleksandra Sobocińska (National Museum in Poznań)
panel members: Joanna Kuciel-Frydryszak, prof. Joanna Minksztym (Ethnographic Museum, department of the National Museum in Poznań)
- June 21, 2025 (Saturday), 11:00 – „The Chełmoński project” – the artist’s craft and the renovation of his works
the lecture will be presented by: Agnieszka Kunicka-Goldfinger (Chief Conservator, National Museum in Poznań)
