Pieczęć/The seal

Oto najstarsza pieczęć Poznania. Powstała najprawdopodobniej w 1344 r., jednak niewykluczone, że datę tę można przesunąć na początek wieku XIV. Używano jej przez ponad trzy stulecia, do 1637 r. pieczętowano nią wyjątkowo ważne dokumenty. Czy jej reprezentacyjny wygląd powinien nam coś przypominać? Oczywiście: poznański herb. Pieczęć wpłynęła na jego kształt. Widzimy tutaj znane z herbu elementy: forteczny mur z bramą i trzema basztami, najwyższa stanowi oparcie dla tarczy z wizerunkiem polskiego orła. Na niższych stoją patroni miasta i katedry – św. Piotr z kluczami i św. Paweł z mieczem. Po bokach umieszczono gwiazdy z półksiężycami oraz dwa skrzyżowane klucze, a między – równoramienny krzyży. Na podwójnym otoku znajduje się napis: SIGILLVM CIVITATIS POZNANIE (pieczęć obywateli Poznania).

Here is the oldest seal of Poznań. It was probably created in 1344, or even in early 14th c. It was used for more than three centuries and major documents were stamped with it until 1637. Should its regal appearance remind us of something? Naturally: the Poznań coat of arms. The seal influenced its shape. Here we see elements familiar from the coat of arms: a fortress wall with a gate and three towers, the highest one supporting a shield with an image of the Polish eagle. On the lower towers stand the patron saints of the city and the cathedral: St. Peter with keys and St. Paul with a sword. On the sides there are stars with crescents and two crossed keys, and in between there is an isosceles cross. The double rim features the inscription: SIGILLVM CIVITATIS POZNANIE (seal of the citizens of Poznań).
