Izabella Gustowska, absolwentka Państwowej Wyższej Szkoły Sztuk Plastycznych w Poznaniu (obecnie Uniwersytet Artystyczny) i wieloletnia jej wykładowczyni, uważana jest za jedną z najważniejszych przedstawicielek sztuki multimediów w Polsce. Posługując się środkami graficznymi, malarskimi, fotograficznymi, wideo i filmowymi, tworzy wieloelementowe instalacje i spektakle mające charakter bądź jednorazowych wydarzeń, bądź rozpisanych na epizody cyklów.
Dojrzałą twórczość Gustowskiej cechuje wielka skala w odniesieniu do formy w połączeniu z kameralną, wręcz intymną perspektywą w oddaniu poszczególnych motywów. Monumentalizm najbardziej uderzający jest w najnowszych parateatralnych spektaklach i wcześniejszych wideoobiektach, ale także w cyklu Względne cechy podobieństwa rozpoczętym w 1979 roku. W jego przypadku monumentalizm to nie tylko ponadnaturalna wielkość występujących w nim ludzkich postaci, ale przede wszystkim długi czas, w którym powstawały poszczególne jego części i mniejsze, wyróżnione przez Gustowską tytułami, zespoły. Cykl ma dwie wersje: graficzną i obiektową. Wszystkie prace oparte są na obrazie fotograficznym przetworzonym malarsko. W obiektach płótno z przedstawieniem naciągnięte jest na ramę będącą jednocześnie konturem przedstawienia, podbite od spodu miękkim wypełnieniem i przeszyte w taki sposób, że powstaje płaski relief podkreślający kształt ludzkiego ciała.
Najważniejszym tematem przewijającym się przez ten cykl są kwestie związane z jednostkową tożsamością, bliźniaczością i znaczeniem relacji dwóch bliskich sobie osób. Praca Ofiara I pod względem ikonograficznym nawiązuje do przedstawień piety: jedna z postaci trzyma na kolanach ciało drugiej, a jej przesłonięta czernią twarz sugeruje stan żałoby. Symbolizująca namiętność i cierpienie czerwień w połączeniu z czernią pozwala sądzić, że to, co jest źródłem bliskości dwóch kobiet, jest również powodem bólu.

Izabella Gustowska, a graduate of the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Poznań (now University of the Arts) and its long-term lecturer, is seen as one of the major representatives of multimedia art in Poland. Using a variety of graphic, painting, photographic, video, and cinematic means, she creates multifaceted installations and performances that are either one-off events or series of episodes.
Gustowska’s mature oeuvre is distinguished by a grand scale in relation to form, combined with a virtually intimate perspective in depicting individual motifs. The monumentalism is strongest in her most recent quasi-theatrical performances and earlier video objects, but also in the series Relative Features of Similarity, started in 1979. In the case of this series, the monumentalism is not only the supernatural size of its human figures but above all the long time when the individual parts and smaller sets distinguished by Gustowska by separate titles, were created. The series has two versions: a graphic one and object-based. All the works are based on a photograph transformed by painting. In the objects, the canvas with the image is stretched over a frame that is also the contour of the image, lined underneath with soft filling and stitched to produce a flat relief that emphasises the shape of the human body.
The major recurrent themes of the series are individual identity, twinning, and the significance of the relationship of two close people. In terms of iconography, the work Victim I is reminiscent of a pietà: one of the figures holds the body of the other on her knees, her face veiled in black suggesting mourning.
