Jerzy Nowosielski, znakomity malarz i rysownik, teoretyk sztuki, teolog prawosławia, twórca płócien abstrakcyjnych, wizerunków kobiet i wystroju malarskiego cerkwi i kościołów katolickich, jest jednym z najwybitniejszych artystów polskich 2 połowy XX w. Był założycielem Grupy Krakowskiej, potem wieloletnim pedagogiem Akademii Sztuk Pięknych w Krakowie. W 1993 r., w 70-lecie urodzin artysty, Muzeum Narodowe w Poznaniu przygotowało wielką wystawę monograficzną jego twórczości.
Od samego początku Jerzego Nowosielskiego nurtował temat aktu kobiecego, któremu artysta poświęcił najwięcej płócien przedstawiających kobiety we wnętrzach, przed lustrem, kobiety na plaży czy wreszcie „monografie” nieznajomej. Wiele lat po namalowaniu Aktu z lustrem artysta tak skomentował ten motyw: „Idea aktu kobiecego oscyluje u mnie pomiędzy pewną fascynacją rzeczywistością zmysłów a spirytualizacją wizji. Jeśli uznamy, że jakaś realizacja stanowi największe wychylenie w stronę fascynacji zmysłową rzeczywistością aktu, to można również znaleźć biegunowo przeciwną pozycję, która stanowi największą spirytualizację wizji. I między tymi dwiema, niejako biegunowo różnymi pozycjami istnieje cała gama możliwych kombinacji. Nie oznacza to jednak, że ta wizja „uduchowiona”, nazwijmy ją tak, będzie wyzbyta elementów erotyki. Nigdy nie chciałbym pozbawić swego aktu malarskiego tego ważnego elementu. Tylko że on tam występuje po prostu w inny sposób niż w tym obrazie – nazwijmy to z „lewego skrzydła”, gdzie fascynacja zmysłowością jest może zbyt zewnętrznie ujarzmiona. W mojej praktyce malowania aktu jest ciągła oscylacja. Różnymi sposobami staram się te dwie zasady estetyczno duchowe zsyntetyzować, w różnych proporcjach dozując elementy działania plastycznego”.

Jerzy Nowosielski, a distinguished painter and draughtsman, art theoretician, Orthodox theologian, painter of abstraction and women, designer of painted interiors of Orthodox and Catholic churches, is one of the most esteemed Polish artists of the 2nd half of the 20th c. The founder of the Grupa Krakowska, he was subsequently for many years a lecturer at the Kraków Fine Arts Academy. In 1993, the National Museum in Poznań held a grand monograph exhibition of the artist’s oeuvre in commemoration of his 70th birthday.
Jerzy Nowosielski has from the start been intrigued by the nude female form to which he devoted the majority of his paintings representing women within interiors, before a mirror or on a beach. Last but not least, he painted “monographs” of unknown women. Many years after painting the Nude with a Mirror the artist commented on this motif as follows: “The idea of a female nude oscillates in me between a certain fascination with the sensory reality and the spiritualization of vision. If we acknowledge that some work is bent the most towards the fascination with the sensual reality of a nude woman, we may just as well discover a polar extreme, which constitutes the biggest spiritualization of vision. In between these two polar extremes there is a whole gamut of possible combinations. This does not mean, however, that this ‘spiritualised’ vision as we may call it will be devoid of eroticism. Never would I strip my act of painting this important element. Yet it features there simply in a different way than in this painting – let us call it ‘from the left wing’, where the fascination with the sensual is perhaps too overtly stifled. As a practitioner of female nudes, I am constantly oscillating between and try to differently synthesise the two aesthetic and spiritual principles, applying elements of my art with differing intensity.”
